SCARY THOUGHTS

For months I have been thinking about what I should write for my July blog, knowing that we are celebrating our Country’s 250th anniversary.
As I write this blog, I am sitting in Boston (attending an aviation telemetry symposia) overlooking the Boston Harbor, seeking guidance and inspiration for what I am about to share. On my trip to Boston I attended Mass at Our Lady of Good Voyage Shrine and took a tour of the Boston Tea Party Museum. I visited the birthplace and home of our second president, John Adams, who was the first Vice President under George Washington. The same house is where our sixth president, John Quincy Adams, was born. I visited the home of Paul Revere and paid my respects to my ultimate boss at Boston’s King’s Chapel.
Old things and places allow the spirit of what was once help me understand and connect with what came before us. Seeing first-hand the humble environments of the past, whether buildings, cemeteries or battlefields, gives me a greater appreciation for those who paved the way and paid the price for us. It’s a spiritual thing for me to not forget the past. It helps guide me with wisdom to try to influence the future, with God’s favor.
On my journey for elevated patriotic and spiritual wisdom, I recently read, cover-to-cover, The Founder’s Bible by David Barton. The Founder’s Bible is a King James version of the Bible filled with historical information about our Country’s founders and leaders. It demonstrates a connection between the Bible and the founding of our Country. I even read the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution and the amendments to the Constitution. I read The New England Primer, which was the first textbook printed in America in 1690 in Boston. It was widely used by schools in 18th century America as a primary textbook for children to learn to read. The Primer was used by all types of schools, public, private and parochial. The Primer covered the alphabet and life lessons for behavior and contained prayers, catechism, Bible verses and religious teachings. I read the book titled 100 Bible Verses that Made America by Robert J. Morgan. I studied more American history in the past twelve months than I have in my previous 72 years of life!
On my search for understanding I read the book titled Demolishing Doubt by Cliffe and Stuart Knechtle. The book cover states “DISCOVER HOW YOUR DEEPEST QUESTIONS CAN LEAD TO LIFE-GIVING FAITH.” The concept applies to the Bible, God, Jesus and history. I love the book’s explanation of proof versus evidence. My takeaway is that proof is scientific law that is repeatable. Proof is the demonstration of facts that are 100% percent true and cannot be any other way. It should be noted that Albert Einstein is reported to have said “No amount of experimentation can ever prove me right; a single experiment can prove me wrong.” It’s my understanding that a scientist or physicist will say proof is about probabilities. The book explained that evidence is information that supports the probability of a certain idea or theory. Evidence represents the building blocks of knowledge. The authors state “Everything we believe is based on evidence. This includes not only empirical observations — seeing, touching, or hearing things for ourselves — but also rational thought, as well as knowledge we are given by others who have observed or tested evidence for themselves.”
I read that faith is belief rooted in trust and reasonable knowledge. Faith bridges the gap between our incomplete evidence and our beliefs. It’s my conclusion that there’s plenty of evidence to support the events in the Bible and our history books. Everything reported is probably not 100% accurate but it is pretty close, supported by cross referencing sources and other historical information. In my layman’s mind, it’s probably like interviewing witnesses at an accident scene. Each witness sees something a little different but all of the interviews, taken together, support what took place. So here is what is in my mind, from my heart.
There is substantial evidence in the books and documents I read and areas I visited to support the events in the Bible and in history books and there are common themes. The words “God” and “Christ” appear throughout the books, to be used as tools to teach future generations’ holistic learning. There are countless references to God, Christ and the biblical rights that were the basis for the creation of our Country. We cannot deny or forget that our Country was founded for freedom of religion even if everyone didn’t all have the same specific beliefs. Our forefathers sought release from tyranny and oppression and elected to risk their lives for the benefit of future generations. Long before the Declaration of Independence was created, biblical values were referenced in countless documents and verbalized by our founding fathers. Over the entire 250-year history of our Country, leader after leader is quoted referencing our values and principles that are God-given and stating how we should behave. We are a great Country and it is up to each and every one of us to remember our roots and purpose.
“….And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your Country can do for you- ask what can you do for your Country… With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God’s work must truly be our own.”

It is scary to think that we would fail to openly speak up and preserve all of the fundamental principles and values our Country was founded on. May we be humble yet proud and united Americans for in God we trust! My heart tells me that together we will continue to make a positive difference. God Bless America!
