EXTRAORDINARY!

May 1, 2026

I love reading about how our founding fathers had to deal with many of the very same challenges we deal with today.  I also find it compelling how biblical principles still apply over 2000 years later!  A couple of these Bible verses are near and dear to me.  For example, if someone was not willing to work but was able to work, they did not eat.  Another reflects that whatever the task, we should put ourselves into it and do the job as if we are doing it for God.

We all have different skills, but to make ends meet, it is up to each of us to do whatever we must do to survive as we follow ethical guidelines.  Our forefathers realized quickly when they came to America that they had to do everything it took to survive or they would die. Despite this knowledge, some chose not to do the many things necessary to survive and did die.  Many of those who attempted to do the right things and what it took to survive died due to disease and other health issues.

Our forefathers also realized that some people did certain things better than others.  This was the start of our biblically supported economic system.  There were the coppersmiths, the candlestick makers, the hunters, the farmers and countless others with specialized skills.  They learned that it made more sense to specialize in their trade and offer goods or services others did not have or couldn’t perform. I think about the scripture in the book of First Timothy that states something like: if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, they have denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

So what does all of this mean?  It means that we should decide where in our lives we want to be extraordinary.  We all must do the mundane and challenging tasks of life unless we are independently wealthy.  We all must decide if we want to just survive or truly thrive in this life.  We all can decide to be extraordinary in touching lives.

Even though I’m not the smartest person, by the grace of God I have been considered extraordinary in some circles.  It doesn’t take money and you don’t have to be born into the right family or have the right resources to be successful.  You and you alone have to make the decision for yourself to find purpose—your “why”—and focus on your mission.  It is not always easy but it can be done and it is rewarding.

This personal decision to be extraordinary applies to all aspects of your life.  It’s up to you and you alone.  Maybe your goal is to touch one life each day in some small way—whether in a restaurant, in traffic, at work or at school.  I am on a mission to find extraordinary people who drink the same Kool-Aid and want to make a difference as we serve God, Country and Family.  I am so very thankful that we are finding these sought-after people.

A wise man once said, “You don’t compete on your strengths; you compete on your differences.”  I pray that you find your extraordinary role and know that it was meant for you!
